blumcenterimage_thumbDr. Susan Blum shares healthy secrets.
Westchester has a new wellness address, and Susan Blum, M.D., an Award-Winning Preventative Doctor, has created her dream in the newly opened Blum Center for Health in Rye Brook, NY. Dr. Blum, the Founder along with her team of “healing experts” has established a revolutionary approach to achieving optimal health and wellness.

On a recent visit, I was greeted with a nutritiously rich green drink that Dr. Blum starts her day sipping to help support the liver detox process, which helps clears toxins. Of course I needed to relate this to beauty, and the end benefit- help you age healthier. I learned that her “retreat for wellness” isn’t only about overcoming physical, chronic health problems, but also about empowering each patient and client to take charge of their own health. I believe we all can relate to this, so I have dedicated this column to some healthful tips I learned from Dr. Blum and Marti Wolfson, Blum Center’s Culinary Director, shares her humble blend of vivid greens’ juice recipe.

drblum_thumbDr. Blum gave me a tour of the Center’s layout- think Private Practice- with comfty sitting areas and a kitchen set-up imitating one your friends sit around sharing daily conversations. In the Center’s back area you will find private doctor/patient rooms, but these too are designed with a warm atmosphere in mind.

As I sat in the meditation room, feeling very relaxed and nibbling on muffins that are hard to believe gluten-free, Dr. Blum compares her center to a tree. She says, “We are a tree, medicine is trying to keep leaves stuck to branches. We are looking inside at the roots to see how the patient is feeding the tree.”

Dr. Blum also feels strongly in protecting ourselves from environmental toxins. This is the best, anti-aging, and cancer prevention strategy. Toxins exist in food in the form of pesticide, hormone and antibiotic residues, and also as chemicals that have contaminated the food from plastic wrap and storage containers. Be mindful of our water. If your water works off a well, it is a good idea to have your water tested for heavy metals, especially if you notice a staining of the toilet when the water sits for a while.

EASY GREEN RECIPE from Chef Marti Wolfson:

Kale is one of the most nutrient dense vegetables and beneficial for helping the liver to detoxify. This salad has a wonderful balance of sweet from the raisins and tart from the lemons with some crunch from the sunflower seeds

blumgreenjuice_thumbIngredients
1 bunch kale, either curly or tuscan, chopped
juice of 2 lemons
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 cup peeled carrot
1 avocado cubed (can be substituted with banana)
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
1/4 cup roasted sunflower seeds

Directions:
Mix the lemon, olive oil, and salt. Pour over kale and carrots. Let it sit for at least an hour. Then add the raisins, avocado, and sunflower seeds.
This can be made and refrigerated overnight.

If you do just one thing differently for your health this year, follow Dr. Blum’s lead and grab a daily juice, meditate more or include even ONE way to avoid environmental toxins- regularly.
